'New Liberty' Chapter. 02
Research part 1: Classroom Box
Observation rendering of the architecture studio in the Royal College of Art during the COVID-19 period, as the picture research and site observation of the "New Liberty" design project:
The studio itself is much closed during the COVID-19 period, in a “controlled society”, the space is highly controlled by “zones”, “walls” and management regulations, generating a generic and disconnected studio landscape and unequal conditions. Furniture is not allowed to move, the layout is not allowed to be changed. Many spaces are not used most of the time. Access control is also restricted. Free self-expression is confined in certain areas, in one’s lockers, personal tables, and certain storage spaces.
This free and creative Art & Design school returned to what Van der Ryn called the “classroom box”,
"We are dominated by furniture."
